Using the GROW model will help both mentor & OHT Fellow structure the session to effectively make use of the time they have allocated for the discussion with a clear goal and a focus on outcomes for the session.
Some example questions to help explore and challenge the mentees thinking during your sessions.
Goal setting questions: What is it that you would like to talk about? What outcome would you like from this session/discussion/interaction? We have X minutes, how do you want to use it? What would be a good outcome from this conversation? In the long term what is your goal related to this issue? What are your timeframes?
Reality/Awareness raising questions: Tell me about your situation What is your attitude to X?
What have you done about this so far? What resources to you have? What do you want to happen in this situation? What’s the best/ worst thing that could happen?
Options questions: What options do you have? Make a list of all alternatives … what else could you do? What are the most likely scenarios you can foresee?
Would you like another suggestion from me? Which option would give you the best result?
Wrap-up questions: What are the next steps? What do you need to do? What obstacles may you come across? How will you overcome them? What support do you need?
